(00:00:01):
Hello and welcome to another edition of Hydrogeek Podcast.

(00:00:09):
So today I will discuss about 10 most significant news of the first week of

(00:00:15):
December 2024 from the world of water,

(00:00:20):
power and informatics.

(00:00:24):
Now, although I am

(00:00:27):
I am referring it as first week of December but actually these news are collected

(00:00:33):
from the last 15 days of the month of November okay so I think rather than

(00:00:43):
referring it as first week of December let me refer it as the last fortnight

(00:00:59):
of November 2024.

(00:01:11):
So let us begin.

(00:01:18):
The first news is University of South Florida scientists used the Chris Hazard app

(00:01:30):
to analyze real-time flooding in Pinellas County and Hillsborough County during Hurricanes,

(00:01:40):
Helene and Milton.

(00:01:43):
The app,

(00:01:43):
developed in collaboration with Georgia Tech,

(00:01:47):
uses volunteered geographical information and,

(00:01:53):
more especially,

(00:01:54):
the community crowdsourced data

(00:01:57):
to identify the estimated water elevation,

(00:02:02):
which enables them to take informed policymaking and emergency management.

(00:02:14):
So I think this is one of the very rare example where a crowdsource data

(00:02:26):
along with the app is used to monitor the water level of the different surface

(00:02:36):
water bodies,

(00:02:38):
which ultimately helped the policy managers to adopt emergency mitigation measures

(00:02:49):
such that the impact of

(00:02:52):
these two cyclones, Helene and Milton, can be countered.

(00:02:58):
Okay?

(00:03:00):
And as per the news received, they were quite successful in doing so.

(00:03:08):
So you can find more about that if you go to my blog, sorry, my newsletter, Hydrogeek.

(00:03:18):
If you go through the Hydro Geek Newsletter, last post, then you can find about this in more detail.

(00:03:28):
The next is ocean saltwater is creeping up the Delaware River in the USA and

(00:03:36):
threatening the Philadelphia drinking water.

(00:03:39):
What is happening is the saline water intrusion through the Delaware River

(00:03:47):
is mixing with the source of water from where Philadelphia gets its drinking water,

(00:03:59):
and it is,

(00:04:01):
the saline water included,

(00:04:05):
is actually making that source salty.

(00:04:10):
So either you invest more money to desalinate it,

(00:04:16):
Or you have to drink that water.

(00:04:21):
That is the problem due to this saline water intrusion.

(00:04:26):
Okay.

(00:04:33):
Now, next news is the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP29.

(00:04:41):
As you know, it was conducted in the last week.

(00:04:47):
so it it aimed to triple funding for the developing countries such that they can

(00:04:55):
combat climate change and there they have devised a new collective quantified code

(00:05:04):
on climate finance where it aims to fund around 300 billion dollars annual by 2035

(00:05:17):
for the developing nations.

(00:05:21):
So they are referring this new decision regarding climate finance as NCQG.

(00:05:34):
And this conference also agreed on carbon markets for faster and more affordable climate plans.

(00:05:42):
As you know, by now you all know about carbon markets.

(00:05:47):
In summary,

(00:05:48):
I can say that any institute which is saving carbon will be paid by any institute

(00:05:57):
which is emitting carbon.

(00:05:59):
That is, in a nutshell, what carbon market is.

(00:06:04):
And there are more details to it, more complexity to it.

(00:06:08):
That carbon amount will be traded in a stock-like market.

(00:06:13):
And it is just like shared, the price of carbon will go up and go down and all these things are there.

(00:06:20):
The only thing is that the institute or establishment or the country or the region

(00:06:27):
who is taking the pain to reduce carbon generation will be paid by those who is not

(00:06:35):
taking the pain to reduce its total carbon output.

(00:06:45):
So in this way,

(00:06:48):
the institute which is generating carbon will become more alert because they have

(00:06:52):
to pay.

(00:06:55):
And the institute which is saving carbon,

(00:06:57):
they will take more optimal measures to save more carbon such that they can earn more,

(00:07:04):
right?

(00:07:05):
So once you imbibe the monetary factor

(00:07:11):
into something, the success rate increases like anything.

(00:07:16):
So that is a good decision.

(00:07:21):
Sorry, according to me.

(00:07:25):
Now, the next news is also related to COP29.

(00:07:34):
Here, they have signed an agreement

(00:07:41):
where it enables funds to be deposited due to climate-related loss and damage.

(00:07:50):
So there are lots of catastrophes going on all around the world.

(00:07:57):
Number of extreme events has increased a lot compared to the last decade.

(00:08:04):
Every week, every month, we are getting a new cyclone or new hurricane.

(00:08:09):
which has devastating consequences in both for the mankind,

(00:08:16):
not only the mankind,

(00:08:17):
but also the properties lost,

(00:08:20):
the agricultural output lost,

(00:08:23):
the water contaminated due to this type of cyclones.

(00:08:28):
The impact is huge.

(00:08:30):
So all the countries who have participated in COP29 has agreed to create a fund

(00:08:38):
And it is expected to start financing all those climate-related loss and damage

(00:08:45):
projects at least from next year.

(00:08:51):
This is another positive decision that was taken in COP29.

(00:09:00):
Next is in October 2024, the U.S.

(00:09:03):
Drought Monitor reported that over 54% of the U.S.

(00:09:08):
is in moderate to severe drought,

(00:09:11):
with 87% abnormally dry or in drought,

(00:09:17):
with 48 states being the most drought-stricken in 25 years.

(00:09:23):
So you can see just by this one-line news,

(00:09:27):
Just imagine what is in store for us in the coming days.

(00:09:35):
54% of US is under drought.

(00:09:39):
Yes, I agree.

(00:09:40):
It is moderate to severe, but it is under drought.

(00:09:45):
And whereby 87% are abnormally dry.

(00:09:52):
So that is really

(00:09:54):
a point of concern which is reported by the Trot Monitor in October 2024.

(00:10:03):
The next is the Environmental Protection Agency.

(00:10:06):
EPA has revealed that this is another very bad news, I would say, news of concern.

(00:10:16):
EPA has revealed that over 11 million people in the U.S.

(00:10:22):
have

(00:10:23):
PFAS, India Drinking Water, as part of the UCMR-5 testing mandated by the agency.

(00:10:33):
Now, you will say what is PFAS.

(00:10:39):
It is not very popular in the developing nation rather than is more popular in the

(00:10:47):
developed nation,

(00:10:48):
I would say.

(00:10:49):
So PFAS, PFAS stands for parfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

(00:11:01):
They are group of chemicals made by humans.

(00:11:05):
They are inorganically made.

(00:11:08):
And since the 1950s, PFAS have been used in many consumer products and industrial processes.

(00:11:22):
But the problem is that this PFAS can leak into soil, water and air also.

(00:11:34):
And people can be exposed to them in many ways.

(00:11:38):
So they can consume the PFAS, which has already contaminated their water or food.

(00:11:46):
So even using the products made with PFAS,

(00:11:52):
and also breathing air that contains PFAS.

(00:11:56):
The result is prolonged exposure to PFAS has been linked to health effects, including cancer.

(00:12:13):
And if not cancer, it will damage your hormonal system.

(00:12:16):
It may damage your reproductive system.

(00:12:20):
And even it can hamper the development of the fetus.

(00:12:26):
Moreover, it can impact the immune system and reduced responses to vaccines in children.

(00:12:35):
The last point is very important.

(00:12:38):
Reduced responses to vaccines in children.

(00:12:43):
And nowadays, after COVID-19, viral disease is the post-19.

(00:12:50):
important reason for the mortality of mankind.

(00:12:57):
So when due to global warming, temperature is increasing, so is the viral effects.

(00:13:04):
And if there is viral effects, we need vaccines to counter them.

(00:13:09):
But if you are exposed to PFAS,

(00:13:13):
then those vaccines will have reduced response.

(00:13:15):
The time of response will be reduced, delayed, especially in children.

(00:13:21):
And as you can easily conclude,

(00:13:29):
or any man can easily conclude by using their common sense,

(00:13:34):
that is not a good thing to see.

(00:13:39):
So we must do something to prevent the release of PFAS into our natural resources

(00:13:46):
like soil,

(00:13:48):
water and air.

(00:13:50):
But however,

(00:13:51):
all those measures that we are taking till now has failed because USA,

(00:13:57):
one of the most developed countries has PFAS in their drinking water which is

(00:14:06):
supplied to

(00:14:08):
Over 11 billion people.

(00:14:12):
So you can understood the situation.

(00:14:16):
Okay, never mind.

(00:14:18):
Let us go to the next news.

(00:14:21):
Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology

(00:14:29):
has developed a pumped energy storage system.

(00:14:32):
It's a new type.

(00:14:33):
For the seabed,

(00:14:35):
generally pumped energy storage system is installed in a river or by connecting two wetlands,

(00:14:45):
one at a higher elevation,

(00:14:47):
another at a lower elevation.

(00:14:49):
But here they have installed it in the seabed and they are referring it as Stensea, S-T-E-N-S-E-A.

(00:15:02):
which will anchor a 400 ton concrete sphere at a depth of 500 to 600 meter charging

(00:15:13):
and discharging electricity through it when water is closing.

(00:15:18):
So they are basically two concrete spheres.

(00:15:23):
So what will happen is they will be installed in the ocean bed and due to the waves in the ocean

(00:15:33):
Well, while concrete has the water flowing in, from another concrete sphere, the water will flow out.

(00:15:44):
So in both flow in and flow out,

(00:15:47):
there will be a bi-directional turbine which can produce electricity in both ways,

(00:15:51):
whether it is rotating clockwise or anti-clockwise.

(00:15:56):
It can produce electricity both ways.

(00:15:59):
So while the water is flowing in into the concrete sphere, it will produce electricity.

(00:16:05):
When water flows out of the concrete sphere, it can produce electricity.

(00:16:10):
So both ways it can produce electricity.

(00:16:15):
So that is what Germany's Franofford Institute for Energy Economics and Energy

(00:16:22):
Systems Technology has designed.

(00:16:24):
But it is piloted.

(00:16:27):
not experimented real-time.

(00:16:32):
So let us see.

(00:16:33):
Let us hope that it becomes successful and if it becomes successful then a lot of

(00:16:41):
energy can be produced through this type of fuel-less system.

(00:16:50):
So the next one is Eco Wave Power,

(00:16:52):
a provider of onshore wave energy technology,

(00:16:56):
inaugurated Israel's first pilot station for generating electricity from sea waves.

(00:17:03):
So the first wave power plant for Israel is now installed in the Jaffa port.

(00:17:10):
And December 5 is the inauguration date.

(00:17:13):
And this is done by Eco Wave Power, a company which provides onshore wave energy

(00:17:20):
technology correct so all the details of all this news can be found in my

(00:17:29):
newsletter latest post so you can visit my newsletter at hydrogeek.substack.com and

(00:17:36):
subscribe to that and you can get all the details of this news the next news that

(00:17:43):
shook the world of power water power and informatics is scottish buried energy

(00:17:49):
company

(00:17:50):
Moshean Energy has raised 3,86,770 from its crowdfunding campaign on Crowdcube.

(00:18:06):
The campaign aims to finance the next phase of the company's growth plan,

(00:18:12):
transition from R&D to commercialization and internationalization.

(00:18:18):
okay so this company motion is involved in using web power solar power how to

(00:18:25):
develop more efficient battery storage system to deliver renewable power and

(00:18:30):
communication now this renewable energy power plant has used crowdfunding to

(00:18:36):
generate its its capital okay so this is also one of the rare instance where

(00:18:43):
crowdfunding is used or utilized to fund

(00:18:47):
renewable energy power plant,

(00:18:49):
which is involved in generating wave power plant,

(00:18:52):
wave energy,

(00:18:53):
and also solar energy and battery storage.

(00:18:57):
Okay, so that's also a nice positive development.

(00:19:01):
And again, we have a good news for eco-wave power.

(00:19:04):
So this company is now really shaking the world of water power and informatics.

(00:19:10):
So eco-wave power has reported its third quarter result of 2024.

(00:19:17):
so it has sailed a power station in taiwan a milestone in an israel based project i

(00:19:25):
think i have just now discussed about that first wave power plant in israel in

(00:19:30):
jaffa port and the company has several similar milestones

(00:19:38):
But moreover, it has achieved 10% reduction in expenses from the second to third quarter.

(00:19:46):
So the expenditure, the expenditure required to run all this project, they are able to reduce it by 10%.

(00:19:59):
And in case of Taiwan also, Equipower has signed its first wave energy project sale.

(00:20:05):
agreement with the company known as i k international ocean energy fight it is uh

(00:20:13):
which is financing a hundred kilowatt pilot project and israel thing i have already

(00:20:19):
discussed so the main point of this news is 10 percent reduction in expenses that's

(00:20:27):
the point because renewable energies

(00:20:32):
sources required huge expenditure to run.

(00:20:37):
If we can reduce even 5% of that expense, it's a big, big achievement.

(00:20:43):
They have achieved 10% reduction, so it's a big thing.

(00:20:49):
I will surely appreciate their operational optimization that they have done.

(00:20:57):
Yes,

(00:20:58):
Taiwan,

(00:20:59):
they have their first wave energy power plant,

(00:21:01):
Israel,

(00:21:01):
first wave energy power plant,

(00:21:03):
but these are all okay.

(00:21:05):
But the 10% reduction is very important that they have achieved compared to their earlier quarter.

(00:21:14):
So that's a big thing that I can assure you.

(00:21:21):
Okay, so many people ask me that how you select this news.

(00:21:27):
You know,

(00:21:27):
I select the news based on its impact and its role in developing the future actions

(00:21:38):
of policymakers in the water,

(00:21:42):
power and informatics world.

(00:21:44):
So that is my main criteria.

(00:21:48):
Take this example of this unknown company, I would rather say, Eco Wave Power.

(00:21:55):
Okay, you and me are not very well known about that.

(00:22:00):
They are not Shell.

(00:22:03):
They are not Reliance.

(00:22:04):
They are not Adobe.

(00:22:06):
We do not know much about them.

(00:22:08):
They are simple Eco Wave Power.

(00:22:11):
But they are doing what we need most.

(00:22:14):
They are reducing expenditure for generating renewable energy.

(00:22:19):
Okay, so that's a big thing.

(00:22:21):
Because in the coming days, we need renewable energy to replace all the conventional fuel source.

(00:22:29):
Then only we can have a sustainable future.

(00:22:33):
So, these are the things, these are the criteria.

(00:22:35):
Like this crowdfunded renewable energy power plant, Murshian energy power farm.

(00:22:41):
There is a crowdfunding, it's a new thing.

(00:22:44):
If government is not paying money,

(00:22:45):
if no investors are not there,

(00:22:48):
venture capitalists are not interested in your project,

(00:22:52):
then go for crowdfunding.

(00:22:55):
Okay, because real man, common man knows what is the main problem.

(00:23:01):
And similarly,

(00:23:02):
COP29 News,

(00:23:03):
they are very important because they are the conference with the major players who,

(00:23:13):
if they want,

(00:23:14):
can control the impact of climate change manifold.

(00:23:18):
They collaborate in those type of meetings, COP29 type meetings, and they decide many things.

(00:23:28):
Although what we want, they are not taking that.

(00:23:31):
But yes, some part of our targets, our objective is being fulfilled.

(00:23:37):
Okay, so that is why I have taken COP29 news also.

(00:23:42):
Okay, and this saline water intrusion due to which drinking water of Philadelphia is threatened in USA.

(00:23:51):
So that's also a very important point.

(00:23:54):
Okay.

(00:23:55):
So like this, this highly impactful news only we collect in this post.

(00:24:09):
And generally I post this type of news posts three times a month.

(00:24:18):
So three times I collect the most significant news of the last fortnight or last

(00:24:22):
ten days and I try to share it with you people.

(00:24:27):
But if you do not comment to my post or if you do not share to your peers who you

(00:24:33):
do that will be interested,

(00:24:34):
then without feedback I cannot develop myself.

(00:24:39):
So I wholeheartedly request you to give some feedback,

(00:24:43):
to give some comments,

(00:24:45):
such that I can develop this type of posts.

(00:24:48):
Okay?

(00:24:49):
So if you want to add your news, it can also be possible.

(00:24:53):
It is also possible.

(00:24:57):
post a comment with your news.

(00:25:00):
I will surely include them in my next post related to most significant news that

(00:25:09):
shook the world of water,

(00:25:11):
power and informatics.

(00:25:13):
Thank you for now.

(00:25:14):
Ciao and see you in the next post.

(00:25:18):
Thank you.
